Purpose

The Integrations page allows you to connect Athena to your existing marketing and analytics stack. By linking third-party tools, you can attribute AI search traffic to revenue, automatically publish optimized content to your website, and collaborate with your team via Slack. Integrations are configured per-website (except for the org-wide Slack bot). This is the central hub for ensuring data flows smoothly between Athena and platforms like Google Analytics, Shopify, Webflow, and more.

What’s on the page

Top Navigation & Banners

  • Tabs: Switch between the primary API integrations grid and the Connected MCP tools panel (which manages your conversational tool connections).
  • Return to Site Health banner: Occasionally appears if you navigated here directly from the Site Health section to connect a CMS. It provides a quick Return to Site Health link to go back to where you left off.
  • Finish connecting Shopify banner: Appears automatically if you are returning from installing the Athena app in the Shopify App Store. It prompts you to confirm the connection.
  • View-only banner: A small chip that appears if you lack editor permissions. It reminds you that you need an admin to grant you write access to make changes here.

Integration Sections

Integrations are categorized into collapsible groups. Each group header shows how many tools are currently connected.
  • Measure & attribute: Tools for importing search impression, ad, and traffic data. Includes Google Analytics 4, Google Search Console, and Google Ads.
  • Create & publish: Content Management Systems (CMS) and e-commerce platforms. Includes Shopify, Webflow, Wix, Framer, WordPress, Payload CMS, Sanity CMS, and Contentful. Tiles you have already connected sort to the front automatically.
  • Reporting & collaboration: Tools for distributing insights. Includes Looker Studio, Slack reports, and the Slack bot.

Integration Tiles

Each tile represents a specific third-party platform.
  • Logo & Name: The service being connected.
  • Status Indicator: Displays a green “Connected” badge if active. If there is an issue, it displays a red error (e.g., “Couldn’t load status”). If it is disconnected, it shows a button to open the connection drawer.
  • Description: A short summary of what the integration achieves (e.g., “Publish content to your blog and attribute revenue”).

Drawer Drilldowns (Opened by clicking a tile)

Clicking any tile slides out a side panel to manage that specific integration. What you see depends on the tool:
  • Google Tools (GA4, GSC, Google Ads): Shows an active connection status, a dropdown to switch the active property/account/site, and options to refresh the property list or disconnect.
  • CMS Tools (Webflow, Wix, Framer, Payload, Sanity, Contentful, WordPress): Displays a form to input API keys, space IDs, or tokens. Once connected, it shows the active site/project, a list of synced collections/categories/document types, and actions to Update credentials or Disconnect.
  • Shopify: Highlights whether the connection uses the newer Dev Dashboard method or the legacy API key method. It includes a dropdown to select the default blog for publishing.
  • Looker Studio: Displays read-only instructions on how to use Athena data in Looker Studio.
  • Slack reports: Shows the connected Slack workspace name and the date it was connected.
  • Slack bot: Manages the org-wide Athena Slack bot. Displays a channel picker to bulk-add tracked channels, a manual channel ID input field, and a list of tracked channels with individual Enabled/Disabled toggles.

What you can do here

  • Connect an integration: Click any disconnected tile, follow the instructions in the drawer (either an OAuth popup or pasting API keys), and save.
  • Disconnect an integration: Open a connected tile’s drawer and click Disconnect. You will always be asked to Confirm disconnect before the integration is removed.
  • Switch active property/site: For Google tools and Shopify, open the drawer and use the dropdown menu to change which specific account or website property Athena should sync with.
  • Update CMS credentials: Inside a connected CMS drawer, click Update credentials. This lets you rotate API keys or tokens without breaking links to previously published content, provided you don’t change the underlying project or site ID.
  • Sync collections / categories: Inside a connected CMS drawer, click the Sync icon (circular arrows) in the top right to fetch the latest categories, content types, or schemas from your CMS.
  • Manage Slack bot channels: Open the Slack bot drawer to add channels using the searchable dropdown, or manually paste a Slack channel ID. You can toggle the bot’s presence in a channel on or off, or remove it entirely.
  • Add an MCP Connector: On the Connected MCP tools tab, click Add connector to browse the catalog of conversational integrations and configure a new one.
  • Open external dashboards: Many connected drawers include an Open in… button in the top right (e.g., “Open in Framer” or “Open Search Console”) that links directly to that tool’s native dashboard.

Data shown

  • Status & Credentials: The live connection status and stored site/project IDs for your third-party tools.
  • CMS Schemas: Synced structural data from your website, such as Wix categories, Webflow collections, Sanity document types, and recent drafts. This data is cached to make publishing faster.
  • Google Properties: Lists of available Analytics properties, Search Console domains, and Ads customer IDs fetched directly from your linked Google account.
  • Slack Channels: A list of public and private Slack channels the Athena bot has been invited to or is actively monitoring.

Common workflows

Connecting Google Analytics 4 (GA4)

  1. Navigate to Settings > Integrations and click the Google Analytics 4 tile.
  2. Click Connect Google Analytics in the side drawer.
  3. A Google authorization popup will appear. Complete the sign-in and grant permissions.
  4. Once authorized, use the dropdown in the drawer to select the specific GA4 property you want to link to this Athena website.

Safely Rotating CMS Credentials (e.g., Webflow)

  1. Open the drawer for your connected CMS.
  2. Click Update credentials.
  3. Enter your newly generated API key or token, ensuring you do not change the Site ID or Project ID.
  4. Click Save credentials. This updates the connection securely without unlinking any posts Athena has already published.

Connecting WordPress

  1. Click the WordPress tile and enter your site’s URL.
  2. Click Detect connection method. Athena will scan your site to determine if it requires an Application Password (for self-hosted sites) or OAuth (for WordPress.com or Jetpack-enabled sites).
  3. If prompted for OAuth, click Connect with OAuth. If prompted for an App Password, input your WordPress username and the generated password, then click Connect.

Managing the Slack Bot

  1. Open the Slack bot tile under Reporting & collaboration.
  2. If disconnected, click Connect Slack to authorize the Athena app in your workspace.
  3. Under “Add channels”, select public channels from the dropdown and click Add channel. (For private channels, you must invite @Athena from inside Slack first, or use the “Add by channel ID” option).
  4. Toggle the switch next to any tracked channel to temporarily pause Athena’s responses in that channel.

Empty, loading, and error states

  • No website selected: If you navigate here without an active website selected, you will see a message reading: “Select a website to manage integrations.”
  • Loading: While fetching connection statuses, the page displays a skeleton grid of empty tiles. Individual drawers will show loading text (e.g., “Loading Webflow”) and gray skeleton bars.
  • Tile Errors: If a specific integration fails to load its status, the tile displays “Couldn’t load status” with an orange indicator. The tile remains clickable so you can open the drawer and try to reconnect or refresh.
  • Page Errors: If the entire page fails to load, a “Something went wrong” box appears with buttons to Try again or Reload the page.
  • Linked from: The main Settings navigation sidebar, the Site Health area (when prompting you to connect a CMS), and Shopify (after completing the App Store installation flow).
  • Links to: Native third-party platforms (e.g., Google Search Console, Webflow Dashboard, Contentful) via outbound icon links in the drawer headers. Also links back to Site Health if you initiated a connection from there.

Common support questions

Why can’t I click the “Connect” or “Disconnect” buttons? If you see a “View-only” banner at the bottom of your screen, or if the drawer tells you that you need editor access, you do not have permission to modify integrations. Ask an organization admin to update your role. I connected my CMS, but I don’t see my latest categories or collections. How do I fix this? Open the integration’s drawer and click the Sync icon (two circular arrows) in the top right. This forces Athena to fetch your latest setup. If I disconnect my CMS, do I lose the content Athena already published? No. Disconnecting only removes Athena’s access to publish new content. Posts already published to your website remain safely on your website. Why is the Slack bot tile disabled? The Slack bot is an organization-wide feature available only on Enterprise plans. If you are on a different plan, or if you are an external member restricted to a single website, you will not be able to connect the bot.
