Purpose

The Sources Visualization page provides an interactive, bird’s-eye view of how web sources influence AI models. It features a Sankey diagram that maps the flow of information from source domains to the AI models that cite them, and ultimately to the brands or competitors mentioned in the AI’s response. This page helps marketers trace their AI visibility back to its root content. By visualizing these relationships, customers can identify which third-party domains are driving recommendations for their own brand, discover which sources are feeding competitor mentions, and spot high-value content gaps where competitors are being cited but they are not.

What’s on the page

  • Page Title: Displays “Sources Visualization”.
  • Info Icon (ⓘ): Hovering this shows a tooltip titled “More About Source Attribution”. It explains how to read the graph: thicker connections mean more responses where an LLM mentioned the brand and cited a source that mentions the brand. It outlines use cases like “LLM Citations Deep Dive”, “Competitor intel”, and “Content gaps.”

Filter Bar

  • Views dropdown: Allows customers to save, load, and manage customized filter configurations.
  • Date Range filter: Always visible. Restricts the data in the chart to a specific time window.
  • Filter button: Opens a menu to add additional filters to narrow down the data.
  • Clear All: Appears when filters are active, allowing customers to quickly reset the view to its default state.

Chart Area

  • Top Sources: The header for the chart section, clarifying that sources are on the left and brands/competitors are on the right.
  • Magnify: A toggle switch that enables a fisheye zoom effect on the chart, making it easier to see dense clusters of connections when you move your mouse over them.
  • Focus Indicator: When a specific node is clicked, a label appears saying “Viewing connections for [Name]” alongside a Reset view button.
  • Sankey Diagram: The core visualization.
    • Left Nodes (Indigo): Represent source domains (e.g., example.com).
    • Right Nodes (Green/Orange): Represent your brand (green) and your tracked competitors (orange).
    • Connections (Links): Flow from left to right. The thickness of the line represents the volume of responses connecting that source to that brand.

What you can do here

  • Hover over a node: Reveals a tooltip showing the node’s name, its total citations, and its percentage share of the total.
  • Hover over a connection (link): Reveals a tooltip showing the total number of responses that link represents, the percentage share, and a two-step breakdown explaining that the AI cited the source, and the source/AI mentioned the target brand. It also displays a hint: “Click to view these source pages.”
  • Click a connection: Acts as a drill-down. Clicking the line connecting a source to a brand navigates you completely off this page to the standard Sources page, automatically filtered to show the exact underlying AI responses for that specific relationship.
  • Click a node: Focuses the chart on just that specific source or brand, filtering out all other unrelated nodes and connections to reduce visual noise. Click the Reset view button to return to the full chart.
  • Toggle Magnify: Turn the “Magnify” switch on or off to enable or disable the cursor-following zoom effect on the chart.
  • Manage Saved Views: Using the Views dropdown, you can:
    • Click Save as view to capture the current filters, give the view a name, and select an icon.
    • Access the (kebab) menu on any saved view to:
      • Edit: Rename the view or change its icon.
      • Update filters: Overwrite the saved view with the filters you currently have active.
      • Set as default / Remove default: Choose which view loads automatically when you open the page.
      • Export view: Download a CSV file of the prompts associated with this view.
      • Delete view: Permanently delete the saved view (requires confirmation).

Data shown

The data visualized here comes from your tracked content across supported AI models (like ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Grok, Copilot, Meta AI, and DeepSeek) over the selected date range. It pulls from your configured competitors and the web domains the AI models surface in their citations.

Common workflows

Investigate a competitor’s AI footprint:
  1. Open the Filter menu and add the Competitors filter.
  2. Select a specific competitor to narrow the chart.
  3. Look at the left side of the chart to see the thickest connections pointing to that competitor.
  4. Click the thickest connection to jump to the Sources page and read the exact responses citing those domains.
Focus on high-value industry sources:
  1. Locate a prominent source domain node on the left side of the diagram.
  2. Click the node to filter the entire chart down to just that domain.
  3. Instantly see whether that domain is driving mentions for your brand, your competitors, or both.
  4. Click Reset view when finished.
Save a localized view for a specific market:
  1. Add the Countries or Locations filter to isolate a specific region.
  2. Click the Views dropdown and select Save as view.
  3. Name it (e.g., “UK Sources”), pick an icon, and click Save.

Empty, loading, and error states

  • Loading: While data is being fetched, an animated loading spinner appears in the center of the chart area.
  • Empty / No Data: If there is no data matching your filters, or if you haven’t tracked any competitors yet, the chart area displays a dimmed, blurred-out placeholder version of the diagram. There is no explicit “No data” text; the visualization simply appears frosted over and cannot be interacted with.
  • Error: If a network or system error occurs while fetching the visualization data, the page defaults to showing the same blurred-out placeholder state as the empty state.
  • Linked from: Customers typically arrive here by clicking a “Visualize” link or graph icon from the main Sources page, or via a direct shared link to a specific saved view.
  • Links to: Clicking any connecting line in the chart takes customers to the Sources page to view the raw response data.

Common support questions

Why is the chart blurry and unclickable? This happens when there is no data matching your current filters, or if your account hasn’t gathered enough citation data yet. Try adjusting your Date Range or removing filters to see if data appears. What does the “Magnify” switch do? It turns on a visual “fisheye” effect. When enabled, the nodes and lines subtly expand and push apart as you move your mouse over them, making it easier to hover over thin lines in a crowded chart. How do I see the actual text of what the AI said? Click directly on the colored line connecting a source to a brand. This will take you to the standard Sources page, pre-filtered to show the exact responses that make up that connection. Can I export this diagram as an image? Currently, there is no direct “Export to Image” button. You can take a screenshot of the page, or you can export the raw prompt data as a CSV by clicking the Views dropdown, clicking the menu next to your current view, and selecting Export view.
