Purpose

The Sources page shows you which third-party domains, social platforms, and specific URLs are being cited by AI models in response to your tracked prompts. It allows you to analyze citation trends, tag sources (as owned, competitor, partner, or third-party), trigger rescans for updated content, and export your citation data. This page is critical for identifying influential publications and partnership opportunities within your market.

What’s on the page

  • Title & Tour: The “Sources” title and an Info (i) icon that launches a guided tour of the page.
  • Grouping Tabs: “Domain” (aggregates all URLs under their root domain) and “Page” (shows individual URLs).
  • Mode Tabs: “All” (shows every type of source) and “Social” (filters the view to social media platforms).

Social Platform Filter Chips

Visible only when the “Social” tab is active.
  • Platform Chips: Clickable chips to filter the table to a specific platform (e.g., YouTube, Reddit, X, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, TikTok, Pinterest, Discord, Twitch, Threads, Snapchat, Tumblr, Quora, Substack).
  • More / Less: Toggles the visibility of platforms that currently have no data under your active filters. Unavailable platforms are grayed out and show a “No data for current filters” tooltip.

Filter Bar

A row of dropdown filters to narrow down the table data. You can filter by Models, Competitors, Personas, Locations, Countries, Owned domains, Prompt tags, Prompt status, Date range, Source tag, and Mentioned status.

Domain View Table

Visible when the “Domain” tab is active. Aggregates citations by root domain.
  • Domain: The root domain name, accompanied by its favicon.
  • Spark: A sparkline chart showing the daily mention/citation trend for the domain.
  • Type: Badges indicating the source’s classification (Owned, Competitor, Partner, Third-party) and any custom source tags.
  • Citation %: The percentage of your tracked responses that cited this domain.
  • Responses influenced: The number of responses this domain influenced.
  • Brand mention %: The percentage of responses citing this domain that also mentioned your tracked brand.
  • Competitor mention %: The percentage of responses citing this domain that also cite a tracked competitor.
  • URLs: The number of distinct URLs under this domain that were cited.
  • Impressions captured: The estimated number of impressions or searches this domain’s citations captured.

Page View Table

Visible when the “Page” tab is active. Shows individual cited URLs.
  • URL: The specific page URL, its favicon, and a checkbox for selecting the row.
  • Spark: A sparkline chart showing the daily mention/citation trend for the URL.
  • Type: Badges for the source’s classification and custom tags.
  • Citation %: The percentage of tracked responses that cited this URL.
  • Responses influenced: The number of responses this URL influenced.
  • Impressions captured: The estimated number of impressions or searches this URL’s citation captured.
  • Source Mentions Brand: Whether Athena found your brand in the cited page’s content. This is separate from mentions in the AI response; No data means the page could not be assessed.
  • Source Mentions Competitor: The tracked competitors found in the cited page’s content.
  • First seen: The date this URL was first observed as a cited source.
  • Rescan: A button to manually trigger a fresh scan of the URL.

Bulk Action Bar

Appears at the top of the table when one or more checkboxes are selected in the Page view.
  • Selected count: Displays how many URLs are currently selected.
  • Edit tags: A button to bulk-assign source types and custom tags.
  • Rescan: A button to trigger a bulk rescan of the selected URLs.
  • Clear: Deselects all currently selected rows.

Export Dialogs

Opened via the Export button in the filter bar.
  • Export Sources: Allows you to download the current Domain table to a CSV file. Includes quick-select limits (e.g., 1,000, 5,000) or an “All” option.
  • Export URL Breakdown: Allows you to download URL-level data to a CSV.

What you can do here

  • Switch views: Toggle between Domain and Page views, or All and Social modes using the top-right tabs.
  • Filter by social network: In Social mode, click a platform chip (like YouTube or Reddit) to isolate citations from that network.
  • Sort data: Click any column header (like “Citation %”) to sort the table ascending or descending.
  • Customize columns: Click the “View options” menu in the table header to hide, show, or drag-to-reorder columns. You can also resize columns by dragging their edges.
  • View source details (Drilldown): Click a Domain or URL row to open its drawer. Use Overview, Pages, Prompts, Responses, Parameters, Creators, or Timestamps where available. Prompts are limited to those that cited the selected source. Creators and Timestamps depend on captured source metadata.
  • Open source in new tab: Cmd/Ctrl-click a row to open the source detail drawer as a full, standalone page in a new browser tab.
  • Select multiple URLs: In the Page view, click a row’s checkbox. Hold Shift and click another checkbox to instantly select all rows in between.
  • Bulk edit tags: Select multiple URLs, then click “Edit tags” in the bulk action bar to assign them all as Partners, Competitors, etc., at once.
  • Bulk rescan URLs: Select multiple URLs, then click “Rescan” in the bulk action bar to prompt Athena to crawl those pages again.
  • Export to CSV: Click the Export button to download your citation data. You can customize how many rows to include in the export.

Data shown

The data displayed comes from AI model responses to your actively tracked prompts. Athena scans these responses to extract cited links, aggregates them by domain or URL, and cross-references them against your configured brand names, competitors, and custom source tags.

Common workflows

Identifying potential partners:
  1. Ensure you are on the Domain tab.
  2. Sort the table by Responses influenced (descending) to find the most impactful sites.
  3. Look for domains that have a high Citation % but a low Brand mention %.
  4. Click a row to open its details, then tag it as a “Partner” to monitor it for outreach.
Bulk-tagging industry blogs:
  1. Switch to the Page tab.
  2. Use the Search bar or Filter bar to narrow down URLs containing a specific keyword.
  3. Click the checkbox on the first relevant URL, hold Shift, and click the last relevant URL to select the group.
  4. In the bulk action bar that appears, click Edit tags and apply a custom tag.
Exporting social citations:
  1. Click the Social tab at the top right.
  2. Select a platform chip, like Reddit.
  3. Click the Export button in the filter bar.
  4. Choose “All” and click Export to download a CSV of every Reddit URL cited by AI models.

Empty, loading, and error states

  • Loading: While data is fetching or filters are being applied, a skeleton table or an animated progress bar is displayed. When scrolling down, a spinner indicates more rows are loading.
  • Empty: If no sources match your filters, the table will be empty. In Social mode, platforms that yield zero results will appear grayed out under the “More” menu with a tooltip reading “No data for current filters.”
  • Error: If an export or a bulk rescan fails, a red error toast notification will appear in the corner of the screen.
  • Linked from: The main sidebar navigation (“Sources”), onboarding and tour deep links, and Sankey visualization drilldowns on other pages.
  • Links to: The Domain or URL analytics detail page (which opens in a drawer or a new browser tab).

Common support questions

Why is the “Source Tag” filter missing? When you switch to the “Social” tab, the Source Tag filter is hidden. This is because per-page scans cannot reliably detect tags across massive, dynamic comment threads on social media. Why can’t I find the “Mentioned” filter? The Source Mentions Brand and Source Mentions Competitor filters apply to the cited pages’ content. They are hidden in the aggregated Domain view. If I click the YouTube chip, does it miss youtu.be links? No. Athena automatically groups known aliases. Selecting the YouTube chip filters for both youtube.com and youtu.be. Similarly, the X chip covers both twitter.com and x.com. Why does the Export button ask me to upgrade? Exporting data to CSV requires a paid subscription plan. If you are on a free plan, clicking Export will open an upgrade prompt instead of downloading the file. My column layout keeps resetting on my other computer. Why? Column visibility, order, and sizing are saved locally to your specific browser. They do not sync across different devices or to your teammates’ accounts.
